So I live in south florida, land of hurricanes.woke up last night to beeping coming from my battery backup (computer type)just before it was going to run out of steam.noticed that the house had no power.called florida power and light and was informed the power had been out for 100 homes for an hour and a half (that's how long my battery lasted I guess)and would be restored by 7:30am about 3 hours away .luckily I had purchased a small Honda portable 1000w generator about a month ago.got it out and running in about 5min. Ran a extension cord through my window and replugged the two main plugs from the back of my tank and my whole system was back up and running.there was no storm or anything just a mainline outage according to fpl.so you never know when a potential disaster will strike.considering our investments in our tanks and our responsibility to its inhabitants a backup plan is absolutely necessary.mine gave me full peace of mind.as it's been said many times before ...make sure you have a plan just in case something happens

I actually think of a generator as a mandatory piece of equipment. Think of the investment you have in the way of corals and fish....not to mention the food in the freezer and refrigerator. My little $300 generator from Sam's ran 24/7 after Sandy hit NJ....for over seven days. Saved my tank and food in the frig., and easily paid for itself.
