A quick question my power went out an hour and a half ago I have wrapped my battery operated heated jacket around half the tank and have candles sitting on top of the sump warming the bottom. is a metal pan in the Salt Water full of hot water a bad idea will the saltwater leech metal from the pan into the water?

With the ice storms NC gets, I'd consider a generator....or minimally a power inverter. I'm not crazy about the candle idea....I would think you'd create hot spots.

Temperature drops 2 degrees in the first hour. power company says the power won't be on for another 2 hours. It' 20 degrees outside. I'm holding stable at 76.

How cold is it by you now? If anything get some hot water in a bottle and put that by your return pump to heat the water going into the display.

Oh sorry....for some reason I thought you had power back. Wrap the tank with whatever is insulating.

Prob not a good idea to use metal but maybe if it’s known stainless? Can you warm water in a pan and put it in a plastic container, just don’t make it so hot that it would melt the plastic.
This. If you have a gas stove, heat some water, put it in a tight plastic container and stick it in the tank. I realize earlier I said by the return pump, I just then remembered you have no power lol. Sorry it's yo early in the morning for me to properly function

Thx for the responses. Power is on. Went from 78.4 down to 75.6 in two hours.
That's not too bad of a temperature swing you should be safe glad to hear the powers back on!

A ziploc with hot water or hand warmers have worked for me in the past and wrapping the tank in a blanket can also help. Glad everything did fine in it. I had purchased a backup battery and while it was in transit we lost power for 14 hours. Needless to say manual stirring your tank sucks and I'd recommend a generator or battery backup.
