Help! I just lost power and my tank has no flow, filter, light, anything. What do I do?! I don’t want to loose my corals or my fish!

Do you have a gas or electric stove?

Circulation is important. If you don’t have a battery powered air stone, you can scoop up water in a cup and dump it back into the tank from a few inches up. Do this several times every 15 minutes.

The point is to make bubbles.

K. Here's what you do. Get a plastic bottle of some sort. And get a pot
Make hot water and put it in the bottle to keep your tank warm (I assume your power is out due to the ice storm that Michigan and Wisconsin got this morning) your fish and corals will be ok without major flow for a bit. So what you'll want to do is get another plastic container and scoop water up and dump it back in. This will create some flow as well as mix oxygen into the water. You can also use your hand and swirl the water around a bit. Just make sure your hands are clean.

You can wrap the tank in a sleepung bag or blanket to help ut hold temperature. For oxygen you lfs should have battery powered air pumps. You can also siphon some water into a bucket and splash it around then pour it back in to get more oxygen into your water.

I'm right next door in wisconsin. We got it as well. everything has a nice thick coating of ice on it. Getting to work this morning is going to be fun. But good luck and keep us updated :)

Wanted to check in to see how you're doing @Matthew Hill just lost power here for about 20 minutes.

Were doing good! I did what you guys told me to and we got power about 3 hours later. All seems to be well! Appreciate all your guy's help.

First of all, glad your power wasn't out that long and everything is ok.

Now that you've experienced what may be your first power outage with a reef tank. Will you be employing or considering employing battery back ups, generators or anything else now?

+1. A more sophisticated setup that uses deep cycle batteries or a generator is ideal, but at the very least a battery air pump should be in every reefer's equipment closet.
