So I lost power last night. Temperature on tank began to drop a little. I ran propane logs since I couldn’t run generator at that time. Scrambling around looking like a fool and stirring water every so often. I did get generator running around 4 am this morning. Good news is temperature only dropped to 74 degrees. Bad news is emerald crab was feasting on my flame angel! . Are emerald crabs predatory? Also lost a blue damsel earlier in week for no apparent reason. The damsel was eating and swimming in the tank.

74 isn't all that cold. It is lower than you want, but shouldn't kill any fish. Lack of flow on the other hand can cause oxygen levels to drop in a hurry.

All crabs are opportunistic. If they can get an easy meal, they will take it. That said, a healthy fish is unlikely to be able to be held down by an emerald crab.

I agree, the angel died and the crab was just feasting. While the crabs are technically predatory, they rarely if ever catch fish, particularly of that size. 74 degrees shouldn't kill a healthy fish. In fact, many of the fish we keep in this hobby prefer temps in this range.

I also had this happen and of course the only fatality was an expensive mystery wrasse. I since have gotten a computer style uninterrupted power supply and have it hooked up to a 3000 gph gyre pump. All told cost about 300 bucks but now my 180 has full water turn over for about 6-8 hours in the event power goes out again. Also if your tank is smaller a smaller power head and heater would also hold you over for a few hours. Not cheap but I will never go without a backup again.

Seriously looking into a backup generator to run whole house. This has happened before many times. Before fish. Btw checked pH 7.5. Not good. Water change is eminent.

Nitrates were 5 ppm amazingly enough. Did fire pull oxygen out air ? Maybe.

The hottest mine gets is 74. Its not temp. Colder it is the more saturated the O2 is. If you started to loose befor the power went out. There was other problem starting. All crabs eat what and when they can. They are opportunity eaters.

Flame angel looked fine before power was lost. Was or could there have been something wrong with him , possible ? Just weird how my blue damsel disappeared which I know he was fine and now I physically saw my flame being eaten alive. Flame was still alive when crab was eating him. PH drop might have stressed flame out. I just checked pH yesterday so it dropped from 8 over course of night. No flow or lack of O2 probably the cause.

We lost power during hurricane Irma. Our power was out for 7 days, I have a gen but I only have it wired to run 110 circuits, no A/C. I kept our refrigerators going and froze several bottles of water to rotate through the tank. The temp slowly went up over the week but it never got to anything close to critical. I had power for lights and pumps so that was all good.

Yeah this is an eye opener for me, I have some options. I already spoke with an electrician and there are a couple of other options (cheaper). WHY is it that this always happens at the worst time possible??? That's life I guess...
