Hey guys, so I am going to be setting up a bigger reef tank soon and I am getting everything together. With a lot of equipment and some equipment that uses a lot of power, can I just use any power strip out there like I would for normal things? I dont want to spend more unnecessary money on power strips similar to neptune. Any input?

I would shy away from standard power strips/surge protectors as they aren’t the best quality. I like commercial or shop units for workbenches that are more robust. If you want surge protection strips I would stick with higher end versions from Tripp-lite or something similar

I love these

This.

I have a few of these lying around, and they are ancient and do survive power spikes and brownouts.

Love those. I hate to see people get the $10 strips and lose a whole system because it flaked out. Weakest link is what will most likely go first

Love my Kasa’s. Controllable via WiFi, monitor electricity usage, can turn outlets on/off based on certain conditions or timing. Closest thing to a controller without the cost or the single point of failure.

Yup. Had some cheapie smart outlets crap out after a lightning storm last week. Luckily it wasn't controlling anything crucial.

No offense on the smart plugs, but I wouldn’t run one on anything life support related like heat or flow. With Alexa adding things to my shopping cart and switching off lights and ceiling fans from commercials and tv shows, I have a trust issue. Convenience and cool factor for sure. I would sure feel bad if I recommended something and a tank crash happened because of an issue.

Like they say, there are two types of motorcycle riders. Those that have been down, and those that have yet to go down.

+1 on American DJ. I've been using a couple of PC100s for over two decades on tanks.

I don't use Alexa so I don't have to worry about that one. :)

not sure what brand I have or etc. All the power strips I use are very high end. I get them either from best buy or even walmart. I don't blow 10 on a power strip but more in the 60 to 100 dollars on power strips.

I love my american dj strips since the plugs are on the back and only switches on the front!
