So I am working on getting the equipment together to start my 144 Gallon Half Circle. I had originally decided to go with all EcoTech equipment (lights, powerheads, and return pump). While I know nothing in this hobby is cheap doing this will slow down my time to get wet considerably.

With that said I have been looking at using NERO 5's instead of MP40's. I could get two NERO 5's for about the cost of one MP-40.

Does anyone have experience with both pumps and could give me personal pros and cons?

Nero 5 won't move as much water as MP40, IMO - they are on different levels which also explains the price difference. Neros have not been around long enough to know if they are reliable. mp40s are decently reliable, but do need parts and new wet sides from time to time. Neither are decade-long pumps.

Take all this for what it is worth - next to nothing. I use Tunze over either of these, but did not want to leave you hanging without any responses. Tunze 6105s are worth looking into.

From my experience, it is a lot cheaper to buy fancy toys from the start than waste money upgrading to them. If you think, based on all your readings, Ecotech is right for you; well, keep saving for Ecotech. With two Neros you will always wonder what that MP40 could have done. Until you buy one. And another.

Me personally, I went with a couple of Stream 3 for my tank. So many reasons. Silence, reliability, 5 year warranty. So if you think about it, they're actually the cheapest option on the market.

I absolutely love my neros, more than my mp10s. However, with a tank your size I would probably get the mp40s.

I have had my two neros for almost two years in my current build. The one complaint I have is that my snails have been reproducing and as they grow- the mid size snails can get in the impeller and cause the pump to stop working. Snail shells are harder than plastic! Not a good mix.

However, the price tag and app are well worth it. Easy to clean, quieter than my mp10s, cord really isn’t noticeable since it is thinner than most. I just think you would need a bunch for a 144gal.

I have MP40 in my 120G and really like the volume of flow you can get. There are also a couple of nice aftermarket options for anemone guards.
