What is a good cover that doesn’t get disgusting? I made one out of the plastic chicken wire type stuff that is used to make lids with but it gets so gross and is just not practical. Any ideas?

It depends on the type of powerhead you're using. I use gyres and vortechs. The snail guards for the gyres seem to do the problem and they make nem guards for the vortechs. So far so good. Although the occasional split ends up in the sump somehow.

I use the "Nem Protect" covers for the Vortechs. They are pretty big, but I haven't had a single nem in the powerhead since putting it on.

I have a fluval.... the smallest model

I would Google "3d printed anemone powerhead cover" - several options

You can use foam covers, plastic mesh, etc. But the 3D printed are probably going to be the best looking options. Especially since foam needs to be cleaned VERY often to prevent flow loss.
