Hi All,

About to buy the red sea nano max (20G) and want to get a powerhead for it, but really have no experience with powerheads because i didn't have coral in my first nano tank (many years ago).

Is a gyre like the reefwave 25 overkill?

Do i need something that can replicate wave patterns or is a simple $40 powerhead enough for a 20G nano tank?

I like the idea of having something that has a controller with options for waves, but not sure if thats really more for longer tanks...

What would your recommendations be?

CoralBox makes some nice small wavemakers. I have an IM 20 and fir CoralBox QP5+ is tiny and moves a ton if water. One would be perfect.

Something with waves would be good, if you are planning to have corals.

Are you doing LPS/softies, or SPS?

I’d consider one vortech MP10 for that size tank.

Was looking at this Zstream SDC, but concerned over the power of it?

For a LPS tank, you should shoot for 20x-50x the tank volume in total hourly turnover. 3x-5x comes from your sump, and the remainder from your power head. That should give you an estimate to start with. The exact number will depend on where you place it, your rock work, etc.

So I think your pumps are a little over powered, but as long as they are adjustable it shouldn’t cause an issue.

It really depends on what you’re going to keep it’s got plenty of flow to start with. No need for Powerhead unless keeping sps most lps only require low to med flow.
