I'm currently trying setting up my QT tank to treat ich on my regal tang. I don't have a spare powerhead laying around so I was just going to take a one out of my DT and put it in the QT. Now, I was wondering, since I was thinking about going the copper treatment route, is it too risky to put the powerhead back into the DT after treatment? I have 2 clowns (going into QT too), candy cane, a torch, two BTA and some other inverts in there. I can't go the hyposalinity route as I just broke my refractometer. Is doing a freshwater dip and then putting into my QT and waiting 6-8 weeks to reintroduce back into my DT an option? I'm not too sure what to do as I want to put the powerhead back in the DT. TIA

If you are going to do it properly, you should run your DT fallow for 76 days, as there are strains of ich that can last that long. In that case, if you are going to wait until there is no chance of a living ich trophont, there is no reason why you wouldn't be able to use the powerhead from the DT. Only reason you wouldn't is if something in the DT needed flow. Otherwise you'll be fine, but make sure to run your tank fallow for 76 days

I believe he's asking along the lines of is there a possibility that copper could wind up in the DT by utilizing one of the DT's powerheads and then replacing it when finished. I'd be a little leary if it, but I'm no expert.

Yes! This exactly what I was asking. I have 3 powerheads in the DT. I want to take one out to put into the QT. And yes, I will wait the 76 days or how ever long before reintroducing the QT fish back into DT. I just didn't want the powerhead contaminating the DT with copper.

Yes, I won't be introducing the fish back into the DT until then. I'm just wondering if it's too risky to put the powerhead back into the main tank just in case so copper contamination.

nah, just clean it well. You won't have much residual copper on it, not enough if you clean it anyway. You can run it in a small container with a copper decontaminant though, or anything else that removes heavy metals from the water.

Okay thank you!
