This is our first saltwater tank we setup around a month ago.

It is not my first choice of tank selection, however it was a gift to my son from my father (his grandfather). Now that it is setup, the half moon really does add a "cool" element to it, and makes the tank appear much larger than it is.

We currently have 3 powerheads in it, all mounted on the back wall facing forward (Hydor 425 GPH).
  • 1 at the surface / middle
  • 1 in the middle off to the right
  • 1 in the lower off to the left

My question is how is our placement? Any ideas on changing them up to make it better? We do have a Hydor Wavemaker Controller brand new in the box we could incorporate as well as a 4th powerhead that could be added to the tank, just not sure how.

The rounded front of the tank creates a bit of distortion in pictures, so I put red circles where the powerheads are located where they can't be seen in the photo.

I know in the photo it looks a bit like a "pile of rocks", but there was thought put into it. Behind and in front the rock structure is all open, with lots of little openings / caves where the rocks stack on one another. We know we will be overstocking the tank a bit so wanted plenty of hiding and "privacy" for the fish from each other and any current(s) we create.

Thanks everyone for taking a look.

The locations look pretty good to me. Seems like you have some flow going everywhere. Toss in a heavy feeding of brine shrimp and try to watch the patterns of movement. FWIW I think the scape will look pretty good once you have some corals filling it in.

I tested mine with dental floss held by long set of tweezers. Make sure there is flow everywhere and you’re good
