im a few weeks into my build and im constantly changing my build ideas.
im now thinking of going with:
x2 ecotech mp10 on either side of my 80gallon tank "mixed reef"
or should i just get 1 mp40 on each side

im thinking going with the total of 4 would give me a very even wide flow both in front and behind the rock display. giving me a good gyre flow.
what do you guys think?

Personal opinion, if you are looking for the wide gyre flow, get a Maxspect Gyre. Price point for two XF230 gyres ($430) on a shared controller verse 4 mp10s ($1140) will be significantly less , and still less than to 2 mp40s ($698).

I run two XF250 on a single controller and really like to ease of programming and the flow in my tank (as do the corals and fish).

If you want to stay with EcoTech, I would stick to the two mp40s, they will still create a Gyre flow in your tank with good positioning. I know a few fellow reefers who use and love their mp40s.

I personally don't get the appeal of a powerhead that can't be aimed anything other than 90 degrees off the glass. Only argument I understand is that the dry side motor transfers less heat to the tank, but doesn't that mean the heater doesn't have to work as hard? It would take a lot of powerheads to significantly raise the tanks temperature... Just my $.02

i have a maxspect to stir my salt mix love the wide high flow. and almost bought more for the tank but i just cant get over the noise. my favorite part of eco tect is the low visibility. since i am creating a gyre flow i dont think the angle is as important. but im new what do i know lol... cost isnt a issue a successful reef is :)

Well I know a LFS that would love your business haha

I am a teacher by trade and do certain things on a budget.

My XF250s had a slight wine for the first week or two then it went away. Now if they start to wine it tells me that it is time for some maintenance - usually a vinegar soak and a change of blades about every 4-6 months.
