I will set up a 20 gallon long reef tank with an Aquaclear 50 or 70 and a 170 gph powerhead. What other powerhead or wavemaker should I use and how many gph?

It depends on your set up. If you want an SPS, which like high flow, you might want at least 600 gph and probably more. Having quite a bit of flow is good for various reasons: oxygenation, limits detritus buildup and so on. There are many kinds of power heads with different price points.

I think I will just have soft corals and lps. I don’t know if the light I will buy can grow sps (mars aqua led).

In my last build, I included 2 AquaClear 70's in addition to my sump. I did this to add flow and eliminate ugly (and expensive) power heads. You can barely see the up type against the background and I have some of my rock scape in front to conceal it nicely. They also provide a place to easily drop in carbon or anything else I may want run.

Downside? Bubbles in the return to the tank.
