I am brand new to the saltwater world and am just now getting a tank set up. I have a 75 gallon tank and will eventually want to add some corals to it. Now as to what kind of corals? I have no idea at the moment. What powerhead would you suggest to start out with? Is it best to have 2 power heads at opposite ends of the tank and point them at each other?

thanks for the help

I'd suggest at least two. Probably more.

My DT is a SPS dominant 120g mixed reef with a 40b sump, so I target the flow for the SPS. I use a pair of Gyre 250's on the back glass on either side of the center overflow about 1/3 of the way down and angled slightly up that max out at 70%. Any more and the waves crest over the front. I also have a pair of koralia 1500gph PH's, mounted on the back in each corner about 1/3 down, angled up and towards the center. In addition, I had to add a pair of koralia 850gph PH''s to the side glass in back near the bottom to keep good flow behind the rocks. I figure that when all are on at max, I have ~75x turnover in the tank. The corals all love it but I did have to take care to place the LPS corals in more protected areas so that they didn't get torn apart.

A LPS tank will require less overall flow, and a soft coral tank even less, more like 50x and 30x respectively.

And FWIW - the fish are not bothered by the flow at all.
