I have a 150 gal display with a 75 gallon sump. I've been using 3-4 Jebao TW40 powerheads, and they work fine--when they work. But I'm discovering the need to be replaced about every six months even with regular maintenance. The set up has been up and running for about 2 1/2 years. A previous thread referenced that one should look upon reefing like driving a Maserati--if it matters how much it costs, you can't afford it. I can, but I don't want to--I'm tired of the aggravation.

If I were switch to the Ecotech MP10 or 40, which both looks better and works better according to reviews as well as being easier to maintain, am I still looking at something considered to be disposable every 6 months to 2 years? Will it work with my Apex, or do I need to buy an extra controller (which is offensive given the cost of the powerhead itself)? I can replace a Jebao every 6 months for 4 years for less than the cost of the Vortech. Is it worth it?

I currently have a Gyre 350, a MP40, and a MP10. I previously had IM DC pumps on the tank before hand and I can say that the Ecotech pumps will be going on my new 225 build exclusively. The flow is awesome, and they are low maintenance vs a Gyre. I bought new wetsides and when I want to clean them I just replace the wet side and soak the dirty ones, no down time. I also have my MP's hooked up to my Apex system, it took maybe 5 minutes to attach them to the Apex. You will need a WXM module to attach them to a Apex though. As far a longevity, I have only had my MP's hooked up to my tank for 4 months, so I can not answer that, but I do know that many reefers have had them for years and years. As far as the saying, if cost matter then you can't afford it, I don't agree with that. Money is money, if you are rich then maybe money doesn't matter, I'm not, so it does. I bought them because, if you look at how much money it cost to steadily have to buy lower end items over and over, them eventually it will add up and cost more than buying the best from the get go.
