I was wondering if you guys run powerheads in the sump for extra flow or just run it without any powerheads?

I do run a powerhead in my sump and it's set on my APEX to come on 30min every 4 hours to do a stir for stuff that could settle in my sump.

I don't run a powerhead, but I am considering it for the same reason as above. Stir up detritus so the skimmer can work more effectively.

I wouldnt run one in the refugium, though. That area is intended to be low flow.

My sump is only 20 gallons the flow through it is such that it hasn't been a problem with detritus

I run an open sump with 2x-4x flow....I also use a 1000GPH flow pump to avoid detritus settling when it needs to be feeding the million mouths of coral up in the display tanks.

Works great. Wouldn't work without the open sump. :)

I personally wouldn't worry about powerheads in the sump unless you are running sockless, like me!

I also run an open sump. I have siporax and chaeto. I run a low power powerhead in order to provide more water contact time for both siporax media and chaeto macro algae.

I have two small power heads to make sure the detritus doesn't settle. one in the first chamber and another in the return chamber

I have one, but it's just outta necessity until I finish my manifold. It's running a GFO reactor.

I run a power head in the first compartment of the sump. It is programmed to come on every hour for 15 minutes. I did this because I noticed detritus settling on the bottom and wanted to "stir it up" to get into the filter socks. Works well.
