Well. Nor cal has a storm hitting with a lot of wind. San Francisco has a ton of power out. So I have been dumping tank water in to get some flow and been agitating the surface with aggressive algae cleaning with the mag float. Tanks cooling down and not sure where to go from here. Any advice?

Also having a shipment of coral coming in today to top it off....sucks.

Pge has no idea how long the powers going to be put either.

Find your local harbor freight tools and consider an AC DC inverter, run extension from car to tank pump and a fan

If you have a ton of cash in livestock consider picking up a generator today and sleep tonight

Ugh. I feel your pain. While i don't have a coral coming in today, I also have no power. Norcal is a bit rough this time year. Heck, the bay area is barely Northern California… I'm another five hours north. Lol
I had to borrow a generator from a friend, little 2000 W Honda… Keepin The whole tank running and functioning, not sure how long my power will be out. Big ol tree took out some power lines.

Just a couple days ago, I was thinking it's winter again, probably should go get that generator. Been meaning to buy one since I started my tank up, years/thousands of dollars later, probably about time.

And we all know defect has some killer stuff, you better get a generator bud!

Another 5 hours north must be in oregon. I am 1 hour south of redding and am fine

Generator is obviously your best bet...next is battery backups to run pumps, then battery operated air pumps. If you have a way of heating up water and then adding to soda bottles you can float them to help with temp...

Good luck...i've been there before, it is no fun.

Any friends or family have a generator they dont need that you can borrow?

Wrapping the sides of the tank in foil will help to keep in some heat. If you don't have foil towels will work.

ugh. I was up till about 3am last night before I had to crash - watching the tank the power and the storm. Hoping for the best today as it is still pounding down. Have an old 1200w inverter out in the garage I have know idea what im doing with but glad its out there. Would hook it to the car in a short extended outage. If it flickers I have a battery bubbler set in the DT just in case but nothing in the FT :( If it was out for a while I would deff be out on the generator from a friend search.lol

Best of luck to you and your tank and any others round these parts running into this.

Man that is a good idea. Common knowledge but it hadn't crossed my mind. My tank would look like it was about to hit the mountain.lol

Just be careful with a generator and sensitive electronics like controllers and led's. Generators tend to produce really dirty power and solid state electronics don't tolerate it well. Only use them to power heaters and powerheads and you should be good.

Another trick I've used is to heat up tap water on a grill or natural gas stove and pour it into 2 liter bottles to place in the tank. Unfortunately we had 3 major power outages in an 18 month span recently so I got lots of practice.

Keep in mind, the OP lives in california (as do i)... the temperature is not as bad as you folks have in the midwest/east coast. Looks like it's 55 degrees there atm.

To the OP, what temp is you tank currently at and by how much is it dropping per hour? Just curious.

Got the gennie running after just an hour and a half to two hours within the power off, hopefully nothing too crazy happened in that short amount time. But seems like my power just came on… Hope you're handling it well defect

Well powers back on here. Thanks for the advice guys. They usually dont let san fran stay down for to long. Was just scoopin and dumpin water and putting freezer size zip lock bags in my tank full of warm water. My DT stayed around 76 degrees and my sump got down to 74. Hope that doesnt do much to the tank. I knocked off some frags from where I glued them to trying to scoop water and will have to glue them back tomorrow.

My frags from Gonzo came in and I didnt get to properly acclimate them so I am just hoping for the best....I floated them for an hour but that was it.

Hope all is going well with you as well Jlobes.

I have heard of people wrapping their tanks in blankets also. I have never done this so I don't know how long it holds heat

All seems well up here bro. glad power is back on for ya too! im still running the tank on the generator though, I got inspired to do some tank maintenance and cleaning, with all cords and power supplies pulled out from behind the tank. gonna do a little mounting board and electronics center on one side of the stand. I hate keeping my electronics in the stand/sump area. too much salt/humidity. I have seen a very corroded/rusted power strip that was under the tank and had a personal runin with corroded wires. since then all plugs outside the tank. sorry, not trying to derail your thread...

hope all goes well with the tank and the new arrivals.

Right on man. Get to cleaning up! We will see how the frags fair tomorrow. I will post some pictures in my tank thread tomorrow. Power came back on after my light schedule was over. Frags have PE so I think we might be in business.
