I have a few PPE's and I was wondering what the difference was with them and the jokers? I have noticed that you do not see very many jokers????????? I have had some awesome growth with all my polyps. I bought 4 mohawks about 3 weeks ago and already has 3 babies. All my pe's are adding polyps like crazy. I just got the PPEs yesterday so I hope they do it also. I did loose one orange envy polyp, but added 3 new babies at the same time. I think it fell and damaged that one polyp.

PPE are a larger paly and they have a green slit mouth. Jokers are zoas that do not have a green slit mouth and from my experience are the same thing as PHE's. The lighting will cause the red ring of the PHE or on the other hand will affect it to where there is no ring thus making it a joker.

Joker (same as PHE with the red circle faded)

PHE (same as Joker but with the red circle showing)

Now here is the ring even more faded.

Now I upped the contrast to see it even better.

Interesting thread. I have PPE, Joker palys, Joker zoas (PHE), and two variations on the PHE Red-Ringed zoas; none of which are the same in my tank. Let me see if I can find my pictures . . .

Joker zoas from Kevin at Aloha Corals . . . my guess is that these are true PHE (Purple-Hearted zoas); they show no evidence of a red ring, nor have they ever

Joker Palys from jam3s . . . again, these show no evidence of a red ring, nor have they ever.

Obviously my PHE Red-ringed variations do not have the green skirts like Rev's so they are not the same morph as he has. However, as he said, I know that when you change the lighting, the rings in my PHE variations will stand out or disappear. However lighting changes for both the Joker zoas (PHE) and the Joker palys have never show any red rings.

PHE stands for Purple Heart Emeralds.

I started to get a few of my jokers with red rings after having them for almost 2 years but when I moved the rock they were on they disapeared the next day now they come and go on some

really it's the green outlined mouth like REV said..
thats about it for true jokers and PPE's

I also have both, but have never seen the red ring on my jokers. Both like high flow and high light in my tank. Jokers are much smaller than PPE.

These were sold to me as Jokers, but I've been told are not, now I don't know as they are PHE red ring. Maybe they will fade? Am I wrong if I sell them as JOkers?

That's what I'm saying. Some people may be able to get similar colors with faded PHE's, but Jokers are much smaller polyps and do not ever show the red ring.
