I place mine at the bottom of my tank. It is 30" away from the light. my lightning is 8x54 HO T5.

I keep mine near the bottom with 250 watt 14k mh.
I use to think that they needed to be shaded to keep them from speckleing, but mine have been in direct mh lighting for 3-4 months now and no change.

I also had mine on the sandbed about 26" from 250 DE metal halides went from 3 to 11 in like 3-4 months then I just moved them a few inches so I could see the new babies then they melted on me, man I was so mad at myself for moving them.

I keep mine in the sand. I have moved them many times, I hope they dont melt on me, I only have 2 polyps!

I have mine about 12" from the light (6-54w TEK) in high flow. I keep them among my SPS, so they get the same type of flow/lighting as all my SPS. Started with 1 polyp and i'm up to about 20

Don't think moving them will in itself cause them to melt. I move mine all the time and even under different lighting from tank to tank. There must have been conditions that existed that they were not doing well under in the first place and moving them caused them to go over the edge. PH stability is a must for PEs. Even if it drops at night below recommended parameters it needs to stay constant within the low/high cycle. The PEs will get used to these changes and the additions of buffers, overfeeding (algae increase=ph drops at night), etc will cause enough of a change in ph levels to stress them.
