ok yall precipitate question... dosing lanthanum... its said to use a 5 or 10-micron sock (depending on the video you watch) to catch the bonded phosphate.. ok cool makes cents... however why a 5 or a 10? What's wrong with a 25 or 50?----------- precipitate size?

who knows what the size of a bonded phos to lanthanum reaction produces? is a bond phos, larger than five and smaller than 10 microns and so own. seems most are just going with---EVERYONE USES A 5.

Is there no science behind the selection of a 5 micron to catch phosphate? i can not find anything why five is preferred this question is not for everyone but I believe everyone would benefit. thanks

Presumably the "science" behind the filter size is what folks find works.

There's never a specific particle size that is made by a chemical reaction. It depends very much on conditions.
 
that's helpful.. so what is the action of the precipitate? is the introduction of lanthanum to the water drawing the phos molecules togehter? producing a larger molecule?

Sort of. When lanthanum and phosphate combine, they form an insoluble material, and the bare surfaces of the tiny particle attract more lanthanum and phosphate and the particle grows.
 
ok ok...... now if one places a lantthum drip into the filter sock 5 or 10. Does the filter sock have to be subject to the flow of water into the sock? can the sock not just float half in and half out of the water in a sump chamber? and the lanthum drip into it

ye see I moded my sump to not use socks. I use a stack of filter fabric (kinda like a trickle system) using various micron rate filter fabrics. It polyfill on top then 100m sheet - followed by a 50m sheet in the middle and then a 25m on the bottom, water flows thru those then thru my old sock port /holder that i converted to hold a media cup for things like carbon etc. this micron sandwich of filter fabric sits above the sump water level. never making contact with it. so you see this sock thing is bothering me. lol

I've never use lanthanum, so you will need to get actual user experiences from others.

But you want to drip into a good flow area, then particles form, and the sock catches them.

If you drip into a low flow area, you may get more lanthanum carbonate than lanthanum phosphate, which is not desired.
