I am sure many have experienced the aggravation of calcium precipitation in your tanks. I made a dosing error months ago and I forgot to clean one piece of equipment: the uv filter!
Today I noticed that I had a new breakout of algae and kept thinking that this was odd for my tank. I decided to start the process of checking everything. I clean all my pumps, all my powerheads, changed my socks, and then I thought about my UV filter. I have not done maintenance on the internal parts in forever. I took it apart and found that it had not been working in months. Water was coming in and going out but the reflective sides and the bulbs were covered in white concrete!
The lesson? when you have a precipitation event you need to clean everything and just because you have water flow through a system does not mean it is working!
Cheers
