I am just curious what types of filtration most of you guys prefer. I am fairly new to the hobby (about 1 year) and have a 60 gallon mixed reef system (40 gallon display/20 gallon sump refugium), as well as a 90 gallon that is getting ready to start cycling. There is a total of around 70 pounds of live rock in the system.
Right now I have a 20 gallon sump/refugium. I used to have bio balls and ceramic rings but have removed the bio balls and am in the process of removing ceramic (LFS guy suggested this but I decided I didnt want this and am slowly removing some each water change). The refugium has a good bit of live rock rubble as well as Chaeto, agar, and sea lettuce. There is foam seperating the refugium chamber from the pump chamber (there are three chambers, the first one has the ceramic, but will eventually have the skimmer) and I put a bag of carbon in the baffle with the foam.
So the refugium/sump, foam, and carbon is right now the entire filtration. Everything seems very healthy and I am getting good growth on softies, fairly good on LPS's and some on SPS's.
I plan on adding a Skimmer soon. How much of a hurry should I be to add this? What sort of filtration set up are you guys running.
