I bought a pair of clownfish for my tank around 30 days ago. After a week or so one of them died, however, before that the clowns were pretty close. Now about a day ago I noticed my clownfish’s midsection getting slightly bigger, I figured it was just fat from feeding. I get home later today and I check on the clown and it’s midsection is HUGE. The bloating is located right underneath the pectoral fin and ends just before the anal fin. It looks like this fish is about to take the biggest number two of its life, but I somehow doubt it. Pictures aren’t really that great but it really is huge. Is my clownfish somehow magically pregnant? Is it sick? Please help

It's not pregnant. They don't get pregnant. Anyway, looks like some sort of bloating.. maybe an internal bacteria infection?

How did the other one die?

Disappeared overnight, and I didn’t necessarily mean pregnant I mean carrying eggs or something.

Swims fine and acts normal. Doesn’t seem like it’s under any sort of stress or in any pain whatsoever

They don’t get pregnant?!? Maybe not in the absolute, literal sense but a female clown fish will certainly carry eggs, which can cause bloating, and would certainly disappear over night given that they lay eggs on rocks just yet sun down (lights out).

That's correct. They don't get pregnant... and if you see the original post, the stomach got that way in 1 day... it's unlikely its full of eggs. In addition, that clownfish looks too small to be carrying eggs .. might not even be female yet.

Anyway.. in this context, I think its probably bacterial.

Here's a post that might help.

My clownfish never got popeye, and it may not have gotten bloated in 1 day, that’s just when it was big enough to catch my attention as I walked passed the tank.

The other post started with a popeye clownfish.. but I think different bacterial infection will show different system.

I would suggest observation and look for any sudden changes... and have the right med and qt ready in case.

Was the other clown fish a Male or female? Were they mated? How big are they. This could rule out the possibility of eggs in this one. What's the term when eggs are blocked?

I don’t know the how to identify the gender of the clowns, the other one was a little under an 1.5 inches long though. Can’t tell if they were mated but they sure were close.
