Pregnant Mandarin

They have been together for well over a year. Courting the whole time, and she is finally pregnant. I now have a pregnant Mandarin and Seahorse at the same time! The other three Mandarin pairs I have need to get busy.

Awe that's awesome, my little lady needs a male, wondering who I could order from that will take the time to determine sex prior to shipping.... Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Mandarins don't internally fertilize their eggs, nor do they fertilize their eggs and store them internally like seahorses. Mandarins are broadcast spawners. The female mandarin releases eggs into the water column and the male fertilizez them in the water column. In healthy pairs spawning should be occurying frequently. A sexually mature female should always be carrying eggs.

I dont own a Mandarin nor have I. So, your saying his is just now carrying eggs? Is his a normal representation of an egg laden female, and if so, how often do they spawn? Just curious.

They will spawn every couple of days.

No, that female is not normal. Perhaps egg-bound or an intestinal blockage. But definitely not pregnant.

They should go fat shortly before they spawn and then look thinner again. This is because they hydrate their eggs before release. She may be egg bound as mentioned above.

Definitely looks egg bound. Dim your lights at night just before you turn them off and you should see the male and female swim together side by side towards the surface and she will release the eggs for the male to fertilise.

I was not aware that they can get egg bound. She is still swimming and feeding as normal. Hopefully this will resolve itself. There other pairs of Dragonets, Red and Spotted, court on a regular basis except my Red Scooters. I think is because the female is still rather small and not old enough.

I apologise, I didn't mean egg bound as in the eggs are stuck. I just meant she is full of eggs ready to spawn!
