So I have decided to use dry rock instead of live rock to control hitchhikers and unwanted pests.. What is the best way to prepare the rock before it goes in the tank? I have read of people using acid.. vinegar.. and just plain soaking in RO/DI water.
What method did you use and what were your results? I don't want to throw the rock in and have huge issues with high phosphates down the line...

Thanks in advance!

I used Carib sea life rock (branch version) and added it right to my tank after a quick rinse with rodi water. I never had any problems.

I am going to be using "Old" dry rock that was used in previous tanks. I put them in an acid bath"muriatic" and then soaked them in heated rodi water with a pump for a week. Now I have them in heated SW with a pump. By the time I get them in my tank it will be about two weeks in there maybe three. Changing the water once a week. That should hopefully leach most of the phosphates if any. o_O

If you want to be certain, I would recommend a vinegar or muriatic acid bath. Rinse well and let dry in the sun. Then cure/soak it in saltwater with a heater and some circulation. Just my $.02 anyway.
