I've been watching some videos where people have been using such chemicals as acetone and lacquer thinner to clean the areas where they'll be applying the new bead of silicone. Those seem to be a bit toxic to use for the tank. I'm sure a post clean is done to remove whatever is left behind, bit is it really safe to use such items. What about just using vinegar?

You want to use acetone because it strips anything and everything...plus it evaporates super quickly.

Just did mine using acetone 4 months ago. Then I let the silicone dry for 3 days and filled the tank. No problems.

Acetone it is!!
Thanks guys. I feel much better knowing its a tried and proven method

When Acetone evaporates off it leaves almost no residue ..

But Gloves and a respirator .. should be used .... As it is NOT good for YOU ...

As far as solvents go it's actually not that bad. Our body breaks it down naturally. Requires a lot to do any damage.
