Pressured to buy a urchin

Well... that's what friends are for!

[snip]... In this month, we will hear of at least 10 collapses, because, well, here everyone leaves for a few weeks in August and well meaning sitters cannot resist over-feeding. [end snip]...

Omg yes!, how do you stop the overfeeders on vacation? Please tell me the strategy cause I have a bunch of new acros and going on vacation in 2 weeks.

I agree maybe to get rid of them but the blenny was 2x as expensive so you would think he would want to sell those more

did he flat out refuse to tell you the numbers or did he just not tell you? i'd agree that you should find a new guy if he refused to tell you and you asked for them.

Ok so now this morning the urchin is out but there are spines all over the bottom of the tank ?!?!?!?

My urchins leave the rocks spotless, sometimes pick up unglued frags, believe they eat coraline to which sucks( I have little but should have way more.

Also heard urchins are a good visual into your water quality

Yes indeed.
And they benefit from a longer acclimation. I've found them to be pretty touchy.
I've been good with most I've introduced, but a couple didn't make it a few days before they were an emply ball.

Don't give them access to all your food and don't have them measuring anything.

Use plastic shot glasses from the dollar store. You can put exactly what goes into the tank on each expected visit and line them up on the freezer shelf, not unlike those one-week pill organizers for people who forget they took their medication.

Also, limit the visits. The tank doesn't need food every day. For a week or two if it only gets fed once every 2 or 3 days it won't have much of an impact, unless you have aggression problems that are managed by regular feedings.

I had a big gha out brake when I tried to fix the Algae issue with a chemical and my protein skimmer went crazy. So bad, that I was trying to sell my system. I then decided to give it one last try to clean it up. I went to the LFS and was told the same as you. He did not refuse to sell me anything but gave me the same options as you were given. I bought some turbo snails and a tuxedo urchin. I think the part you're missing is you. You will need to go in with a turkey baster and suck some gha up with that. You’ll also need to pull it off. With the cuc and yourself you will be able to clean it up quick. I have a 120g and like said before it took me weeks. The cuc is now keeping it under control and I haven’t had to do anything about gha in a couple of months now. GL

He's probably done for.
Once they drop spines it's pretty much over for them.

the urchin I ordered (pincushion) arrived missing many spines (lost in transit) and lost some while I acclimated it, however it totally bounced back now and looks great, all spines regrown

Like above. Pre-made portions . I have everydays food in 50ml beakers in my freezer and one in the refridge. They dump in the refridge one then place one from the freeer in the fridge to thaw for tomorrow

My best algae killer is by far my emerald crab. He shreds GHA

I recommend what Brandon and scott said. Pull your rocks and scrub with a brush. Vac all the gravel. Then your urchin will keep things clean. I did this and had to do a few rocks two or three times. I have a tuxedo and long spine urchin. I’m happy with the results.

I don't pull the rocks as coral attached but a stiff toothbrush strategically deployed does wonders.

Fixing gha, three options:

-Make a custom approach not part of a work thread, try it, see if it works

-keep trying external actions like animals, plants and wait to see if they work (algae grows during this extended wait)

-use a method part of fifty page gha cure threads and have this fixed by last Monday.

The reason gha invasions are a psychology vs a biology issue is due to that 3x choice, and only 1% picks the one that ends the wait, stops the loss, done.

Gha takes a couple days to beat when it's willed to be that way. When gha takes over and doesn't abate, it was willed that way.

I lay out all my food put it into bags. I than label all the bags and put them into the freezer. I hide the rest if the food so the have access to only the food I left for them.
I dont have them feed the coral. IMO coral will fine without food for a little bit

Get a auto feeder. I use one from Current USA I think it was $25 and runs on two AA batteries. Adjust the feeder to your liking and pop it on the tank

I fill it once every couple of weeks with pellets, and I'm good to go

As far as parameters I took him a sample of my water and he told me everything was spot on but would not give me numbers, this massive algae bloom started after I added 2 pints of cold brew copepods to my tank to seed the tank and feed my scooter blenny. I have had fish in the tank for roughly a month
Bro, he just wants a sale. Can’t even give you your numbers? Did you watch him test it? How long did it take him? If he went in the back and was out 2 mins later... nope.
