I had a similar urchin. I moved him using 2 plastic forks. I slid one fork under him and one fork on top. Never got stuck. The bottom fork can be used to pry him off.

Here's how my day has gone thus far...my tank is at work, for those who don't know.
I walk in to the office and see him in the same place as yesterday and the day before...just relaxing. Then I turn around literally 5 minutes later to this

And if I had a fork handy, I would have stabbed it and my new favia frag in one fluid motion!

I'm proud of myself for not getting all angry and throwing the thing, literally, out my window! I ended up picking it up gently, bare handed, one spine between thumb and finger and dropped him in my specimen container.
 
It amazes me how much Martin Moe looks like Finbar Furey.

My two hobbies collided for a very brief moment there.
