Hey guys,

I need some help here.

My reef tank is in my living room. And I just got word that I will be getting whole new windows in my house.

It so happends this will probably happen in the winter.

The outside temperature will be arround -10 to 5 degrees celcius.

Changing the windows on the bottom floor will take about a full day.

So... Im a little bit worried. How the heck am I going to keep my temperature at 25 degrees?

I can probably put arround 950W of heaters in my tank. I have like 5 laying arround. And thick styrofoam plates on all sides but the top.

Will this be enough? Any other ideas?

I saw someone cut up styrofoam containers and placed around his tank to preserve temperature. I forget if it was to conserve heat or not. Not sure if it’ll help. But also, you’ll want to cover the tank so that debris doesn’t get in from the installation.

Styrofoam insulation around, even the sump if you have one. Toss a blanket over the top. As long as everything’s running it’ll be fine. Just watch the temp. Should be ok if they are quick at their job.

Home Depot- 4’ x 8’ sheet of 3/4” styrofoam surrounding your tank then cover with moving blanket $7.99 at Harbor Freight...

Also the top? What about gas exchange and lighting?

Shutting doors is not possible since iys in my living room

For the top- that’s what blanket is for

Your tank water is a huge heat sink, I’d doubt the window will be out for more than an hour, the tank won’t notice it a bit.
Call the installers and ask them how long the window will be out then base your preparations on the answer. Most of the time spent installing Windows is removing/installing moldings and trim pieces, the glass is in place while doing that.

Almost forgot- when attaching Styrofoam over glass, place a Foot warmer (like hand warmer) heat pack to glass

Ive got the solution. Styrofoam. And a temp controller that switches a relay that in turn will turn on a buttload of heaters my dad also has 2 300w on his shelf.

That would mean about 1500w on heaters.

Dont think styrofoam is even needed? :D
