Recently I refinished an Iwaki 70 from rusting that occurred around the fan assembly. This pump was in my basement fishroom. I also have in the cue a dolphin pump and a iwaki 100 that need similar work. They are both were in another guy’s basement fishroom.

Obviously the air these pumps are exposed to is salty. Any other ideas besides a dehumidifier in the room to stop or at least mitigate rusting of these metal housings, shafts and fans?

Couldn't you apply some sort of coating to the exposed metal? Whether oil based or something that cures.

Perhaps. Which I have done that for the pumps that have already rusted. I am more talking about new pumps. For instance I will be placing a new MRC and Reeflo pumps back on the basement and i would like to prevent them from rusting.

It’s hard with fan cooled pumps in a fish room. Dehumidifier helps, but there’s not a lot to be done about aerosolized salt.

Definitely no leaks or salt creep anywhere. Salt is not supposed to evaporate with the H2O that makes your fish room humid. That’s why we add freshwater to replace. Adequate ventilation in the fish room can help tremendously. Basements can be muggy due to lack of natural ventilation.

I’m not sure if this would work for you but maybe get a rag and spray some wd-40 and wipe down your pumps as a part of regular maintenance. I have a ocean boat with an in board engine in it and I spray the block down with Ed-40 to make a barrier from the salt to keep it from rusting.

Not sure if that would work either, but it wouldn't hurt a thing! definitely will give this a try! Thanks for sharing!
