You written "another example is aspartic acid (a natural amino acid). It is readily taken up by certain corals, which rapidly incorporate it into proteins that may play an important role in calcification.12 The relationship between certain amino acids and calcification in corals was briefly mentioned in a previous article on the mechanism of calcification and will be discussed in detail in a future article. A brief explanation of how and why aspartic acid and certain other amino acids and organic materials may be involved in calcification is included below."

Are there any new break threws with Aspartic acid has any new work been done Are there any other amino acids that are of intrest.
Are you a firm believer that we should add man made acids to our tanks

I'm not aware of too many direct studies, but there are many amino acid products available to hobbyists that include aspartic acid, and many people use them and like them. Whether they are just a source of N in a low nutrient tank, or have other specific utility is hard to say.

Before they were availible people still had success with keeping even SPS corals. Are Ammino acids on a typical reef even in the water that is in the DOM of the water?

Yes, the reason corals thrive in very low nitrate and phosphate in the ocean, but seem to suffer in reef tanks at such low levels is that the corals are not getting the same amount of biological food (bacteria, zooplankton, etc.), of which amino acids (proteins) are a major component. :)
