I was at a LFS fish store and spotted this unassuming little guy just attacking the algae in the tank. Did a bit of googling and thought I might have possibly come across a juvenile princess parrot. Took a bit of a gamble and brought him home. Any parrot afficionados have a guess? He’s about 2.5”
How's the parrotfish? I think I have two initial/juvenile princess parrotfish. I did not mean to order 2. Somehow had qty 2 when ordered did not find out until it was too late. I am going to have to grab pictures tomorrow They are hiding for the night. The two look different but are same size maybe 2". One looks more like the fish in the first pics you sent but has yellow lining the top and bottom of its caudal fin. The other is the same size but has no lines/bars going horizontal across the body. It has nothing just a gray greenish color with no yellow on the top and bottom tips of the caudal fin. The first one actually is the same shade of color not the more black and white of the first pic. I have them both in the same tank for right now but figure I am going to have to split them up before they mature too much. Even at 10" two of these maybe too much for each other to handle in a 220g.
Some pics of them both. I have to stand far from the tank they are very shy. They are doing OK. Made it through 30days of qt.
These first pics are of the ones that does not have the stripes. But looking at these zoomed in it looks like the stripes may just have already transitioned away.
These are the ones with stripes.
This is of them in same frame
Sorry for poor picture quality. They bolt to the other side of the tank when I try to take pictures up close. They don't trust it when I have things other than the food dish I carry at feedings. They trust that but nothing else.
Seeing yellow now in the anal fin of the stripe less one now. Light must have it from the sides. So maybe one is just further along in the transition.
I've had interest in getting a princess parrot. There seems to be some confusion about the final total length of them. One source says 10 inches. Several other sources say up to two feet. Every source uses the same scientific name. The articles do say that they need to be fed constantly, Nori and live coral. The coral trims their beak and is necessary for digestion.
Everything I have ever heard for Princess its been max 10". Its the Quoyi that has a lot of confusion around its size. And what posts I have seen from the last 2 years they are pretty much all saying 15" in the wild 10" in tank. I have also heard a lot of people had good long-term success with bi Color Parrots and they also stay in that smaller size range.
