I have two clownfish that I have owned for several years. They have always swum near the top of the tank. However recently one of them seems to be gaining a lot of black coloring and now is quite lethargic and isn’t eating. Any idea what could be wrong?

Any aggression between the pair? The black doesn’t look different from normal clown patterning, but it just showing up could indicate some stress. I see a white spot on the side, might just be sand or a bubble.
What are params? Any new additions to the tank?

How many years are we talking? Do you have a anemone in the tank?

I see maybe early Brook….
I see some fuzzy discoloration just behind the eye, and upper gill area.
Not eating is a problem.
Temp relief via fresh water dip.
Formalin is one treatment if it is Brook.
Common problem.
See disease section.

Hi Sharkbait
The two clownfish have always been buddies. No new additions to the tank. The one spot you saw was just a bubble or something. I am not sure what is wrong. I have suspected a possible swim bladder issue ad she always stays towards the top and hasn’t been swimming down at all. But the lethargy and not eating definitely have me worried. I am tempted to treat the tank for bacterial infections just in case. It could be she is just old but since the change in behavior was sudden I am not convinced.

May be a buoyancy issue. Black is a natural pigment and onyx clowns are one that starts orange and changes to black. Yours may be Mocha clowns which turned black
