Hello CZ members!

The ZoaID council members are asking you for your help on a special project we've wished to carry out for some time. It has come to our attention that many of the morphs listed under the gallery can be somewhat TOO similar, or in some cases, identical but just under different lightings.

Since it is our utmost wish to strive for clarity and share correct information, we have decided to compile these galleries into their appropriate groups; meaning some will be subcategorized into others while some will simply be recombined.

Please submit a list of morphs you believe are identical and has been incorrectly categorized onto this thread. ZoaID will compile this list and correct them accordingly. Since these morphs have been listed uniquely for some time, we will utilize the ‘AKA’ labels on ZoaID to help keep track if someone does a search down the road. Generally, ZoaID avoids using ‘AKA’ names and this feature was put into place for grandfathered Zoanthids with multiple names. But for this combination task, the “Alien Eye†morph may have an ‘AKA’ listing of “Carribean Beauties moved to Alien Eye 2008.03.02 as per discussion on CZâ€, or something to that effect. A single morph can have multiple ‘AKA’ names on ZoaID for these cases.

Thank you to everyone who will participate in advance, and most importantly, have fun figuring this out with us! :)

Armageddon
Armor of God
Devil's Armor

are all so close to the same to me I think they should be one. Lighting changes can make the center pattern change a bit like that IMO

Hellsfire and Samhains are not the same, Hellsfire are bigger while you can put 2 polyps of Samhains on a end of a pencil eraser. Samhains also have tiny white mouths while hellfires don't.

Good idea though might take some heat off of Zoaid.com from those that complain about names as well......

But the discussion will go, in the same tank you can tell the difference between these three easily. If I knew how to post pics here, I'd would show you. The difference between armor's and aog's (norman') deals not only with pattern, but also skirt length.

I am not trying to be a stickler on this, but these three are "biggies" and if you can not tell if they are different, you might check your sources. Just look at the polyps on Exoticfrags.

Yes I agree all of those three are totally different. I have all three in my tank atm.

Thank you for the clarification James! :D That's why we wanted to post it here so we can actively discuss it as we compile a list. Some of the morphs we never owned ourselves so personal experience always helps with these things.

Marko's got it down. I've had the luck of owning all three and they are definitely different! All unqiue and sweet in their own rights. :D

piberoptikz Rockstar Supernova and Devils Armor?

I think you might be right! They are extremely similar IMO. I'll add it to the list. :)

Here's the list so far along with few others that ZoaID council members suggested. LMK what you guys think.

Celestials / Baby Back Blues
Eyes of Rah / Blow Pops
Grateful Dead
/ Fire & Ice
Kaleidoscope / Eagle Eyes
Raskal311's Paly / Raspbery Limeades
Tiger Hawk Claw / Lunar Eclipse
Darth maul / Orange Splash
Alien Eye / Caribbean Beauties
pink eye / pink wagon wheel
Pink Zoot Suit / Envy Red
Rockstar Supernovas / Devil's Armor

Kigs,

I work with databases all day and after 4 years I have come to appreciate the true ability of attributing data according to different criteria/fields.

I think most of us will agree that using pictures to decide an ID is a bit of an archaic method in that we are subjected to the posters tank conditions and photography skills. So why not setup a list of standard characteristics that each zoa/paly has and use this to group similar corals.

So let me layout a methodology to my madness:

- Skirt color:
Primary > Red, Green, Blue, Brown, Yellow, etc...
Secondary > Null, Red, Green, Blue, Brown, Yellow, etc...
- Oral Disc Color:
Primary > Red, Green, Blue, Brown, Yellow, etc...
Secondary > Null, Red, Green, Blue, Brown, Yellow, etc...
Third > Null, Red, Green, Blue, Brown, Yellow, etc...
- Mouth Color:
PE type > True, False
Primary Color > Null, Red, Green, Blue, Brown, Yellow etc...
- Speckles on Oral Disc:
Color > Null, white, blue, green, pink, etc...
- ????????????????? (Any other characteristic general characteristic)

By setting up this database we can query out similar zoas and subject them to more specific groupings. Perhaps this is more work than it is worth but I think an individual user can make quick work of fitting each picture into a specified category.

Just an idea from a crazy man.

Luciano, that's not crazy at all man - we were actually considering categorizing them into groups according to the current classification; i.e. zoanthids, palythoas, protpalthoas etc etc. After we were done cleaning up the similar/same galleries, we were going to move on to this idea. You read our minds! :)

Your ideas on Skirt, Oral Disc, Mouth and Speckles are definitely an improvement to our initial idea! Maybe a search engine based on these standards that will categorize according to the data inserted? Or a gallery divided according to their scientific classification, then branching out to subgalleries that satisfies such colors.

So are we thinking that it may be a good idea to setup a Zoa-ID query?

BTW, that is an old PIC and does not reflect the actual search criteria.

PS. When do I get a Zoaid job? 401K and benefits. :D

You forgot the fame and hot reef chicks that comes with the job Luciano. Oh wait...wrong job

That sketch looks awesome! You said old pic, when did you come up with this? It would definitely save time narrowing down a morph instead of scrolling through the galleries. We could probably add a field that says "AKA" or "Common Names" to make it even more accurate. I gotta link Who Dah to this thread. :)

Heya,

I was asked to chime in on this thread.
:D

One reason I hadn't yet was that ficklefins and I have been PM'ing on this exact topic. I think it has some nifty potential! We had discussed doing some similar things on RC many moons ago but it never came to fruition. ficklefins has come up with some new stuff too that is pretty cool!
:D

I've been giving some thought on how to programatically introduce this feature set. One bonus is that the gallery is now a mysql backend (has been for some time now) vs. a flatfile backend.

Ty ficklefins!!

I know zoanthids and "palys" are in the process of being reclassified anyhow so maybe using things like zoanthids, palythoa, protopalythoa isnt a good idea right now, but I agree there are a lot on there that are prety similar-you guys are in for a lot of work and arguing...good luck!
