So I was prepping my 200-gal. reef tank in preparation of leaving on vacation for a week (this Jan 12 of last week)
So the day before we are set to leave I'm doing a large 60-gallon water change, skimmer cleaning, new carbon for the reactor, etc. etc.
....AS I am cleaning up the final touches with my sump and about to close the doors and call it a day, the 1-1/4" flex line on my DC-1200 decided to POP OFF the pump's output barb flood my floor immediately in front of my eyes, with me LITERALLY two feet away! Obviously water was gushing everywhere at about 1,800 gph or whatever these things are rated for, but incredibly I was right there to grab the hose, bend it over, and reduce the damage to only a few gallons lost onto my hardwood floor.
Despite the mess and chaos that had unfolded, I couldn't help but ask myself: WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF THIS HAPPENING AT THAT EXACT POINT IN TIME, WHEN I JUST HAPPENED TO BE THERE TO CATCH IT????
- NO, I was not messing with the pump thus jogging loose the connector or anything like that. (the event was completely random)
- YES, I AM the idiot who failed to order a hose clamp of proper size and install it when I installed the pump in the first place (this was over a month ago)
- YES, I DID stay up until 4:00 AM that night (or, er, morning) completely replumbing the whole thing with new glued PVC and related connections.
- NO, I had absolutely NO MORE PROBLEMS from that point forward, and did in fact finish my vacation without a hitch.
I am now back home, looking at my cherished reef tank, and Pondering "WHAT IF"!!!????
Granted, I AM the moron who took the risk of not using a propper hose clamp (it seemed incredibly tight/safe) but that is not my point....
HOW IS IT THAT THIS DID NOT HAPPEN WHILE I WAS AWAY??? Had that hose popped off at ANY other time.....
