i'm hoping this is proper coralline growth instead of cyanobacteria. can anyone confirm?

There is hints of it there on the rock, but on the sand bed looks like cyanobacteria.

How old is the tank?

Nutrient export, water changes.... Yes light bulbs. Limiting feeding with fish.

Upping flow in the tank helps. Vacuuming the sand once a month helps.

Keeping N03 above P04. N03 around 5ppm and P04 at trace, .02.

sorry, GAC, GFO?

edit: i have a biocube 29. what's the best way to implement chaeto into the refugium?

(GAC) Granular activated carbon, (GFO) Granular ferric oxide.

cyano is present in all tanks in the water column. No one knows for sure what causes it to precipitate and form the mats, but there is a correlation with high nutrients. On the other hand, it is also common for tanks with little to no nutrients to have cyano mats. This is likely due to cyano's ability to pull nitrogen from sources other than NO3, and thus able to out compete corals when NO3 is zero and trace PO4 is is present.

ergo @Flippers4pups post on keeping NO3 and PO4 above zero. Red Sea publishes target numbers based on the type of corals you keep and whether you desire emphasis on growth or color.

fwiw, since I started focusing in keeping my corals happy and not worrying about nuisance algae and bacteria, I'm a happier reefer and my tank reflects that. Yup I do have GHA and red turf , but I now view it as part of of the aqua-scape that requires periodic removal, but my healthy corals out compete them for the attention of my eyes.

this is my main concern for the future. as long as it is kept to a minimum and it is controlled i'm fine with it if it's natural. right now i only have some green mushroom coral which seem to be thriving. i also have a lawnmower blenny going on for over a month now and it seems happy. i had two astrea snails (they seem to have starved to death); 2 trochus and 2 nassarius. the nassarius i rarely ever see cuz they're always under the sandbed. so other than the astrea passing everything looks great.
