Proper dosing of Coppersafe

Darn it @HotRocks . Curiosity got the best of me. I just bought one: Checker, xtra reagent and calibration liquid. I've got fish midway through copper in my QT right now and I'm very curious about what the test result would be with the Checker.

Lol I know I started something didn't I. I hope all of you can help me validate this further. Ultimately, once we get confirmation from Hanna, this could be a breakthrough for the hobby!

Sounds about right. I'd dose 2ml AM & 2ml PM and start testing end of day 3. Therapeutic levels of Coppersafe are 1.5ppm - 2.0ppm. So you have to decide where you want to be in that range. Be careful with the wrasse. Slow dosing is important with them. And I certainly wouldn't want to be over 2.0ppm

The other R2R member was using a new bottle of Coppersafe and a new API Test Kit. He should have gotten to the following 2.0 ppm at 54.25 ml. of Coppersafe, but he hit that level at 30 ml. tested with API Copper Test Kit. Yikes!

Thanks Big G. My original calculation was .3ml/gal x 25 gal = 7.5ml x 6 doses = 45ml total. A full 50% more than we are now aiming for. Significant difference. I'll post up my results in this thread after dosing complete.

Just test frequently, as there is absolutely no way of knowing when they changed the concentration and what the concentration of the bottle you have is. If it was recently purchased I would be highly suspect!

I'm getting ready to jump from my prazi treatments of my clowns into copper sarting on Monday. Dosing into the QT will have to test and test and test.

Any commentary on the Salifert test kit and Cupramine compatibility issues?

If this works as well as it looks, this would certainly give reefers another option, especially those with expensive fish. But as Humblefish mentioned earlier, it might be a bit of a tough sell for some to change from a 10.00 test kit to a kit that costs close to 100.00 (Checker, xtra reagents, calibration sample, & shipping)

Please keep us up to date with this, also! I have found that Fritz tried to be helpful but are very ignorant of their own product. To the point where they couldn't explain why the recommended dosing concentration on their website didn't match the end result of their recommended dosing on the bottle.

At least if you give them the batch number they may be will and able to tell you if there was a change.

Picked up the bottle about a week or two ago. Both carton and bottle say Active Ingredients: (Chelated Copper Sulfate 2.2%).
The recommended dosage on my bottle is 5ml for 4 gal. This translates into 31.25ml for 25 gal. Not very far off from what Big G suggested.

The problem is that the recommended dosage on the bottle was, in the past, way low. Something has changed.

So the recommended dosage is the same but the results are different. Could they have increased the concentration to match their rec. dosage?

I agree. But for me it's fractional compared to the cost of a single fish. Everyone has a budget. But you know as well as I do the complete setup of a DT/QT is substantial, compared to 100 bucks!

I wish it wasn't a factor but.... how many times have you seen people lose thousands of dollars in fish and yet say they didn't QT because they didn't have the money to set one up?

A qt is to cheap to don’t have one. We buy fish for way more than it cost to have a qt.

I agree, to which I will never be able to understand. Now I was brought into the hobby by my good friend @4FordFamily, and was also told that this isn't worth doing if you don't QT the fish. So for that I am thankful. But I guess what I am getting at is, even a QT isn't all that expensive to set up, in comparison to most peoples displays and livestock within. Mine is a 40B that I bought off craigslist, along a 55 that is at Jasons that we went in together on. Both tanks we have less than $200-$225 invested.

I have 2 QT's, a 10g and a 20g. Every fish in my tank went through one or the other. I'm in less than $150 for both. Probably under $100.

I would tell you about how few fish I've lost in my DT but I don't want to go home and find them all dead.

I got mine from them direct as well.
@Big G I also ordered another set of reagents (since I've burnt through the included, and well into my first pack!), and calibration fluid as well today.

When topping off a QT that is being treated with Coppersafe do I have to add Coppersafe to the RO/DI water? If so should I wait until I reach the therapeutic dose before topping off?
