Just about gave up the hobby then I gave my head a shake and started a new project back in January of this year.

The system
25 gal display, 25 gal sump
Simple LED lights
Heater
Thermometer (constant 26.5 C)
Return pump
Powerhead in display
Bag of charcoal in sump
Cheap $12 protein skimmer (from China uses WOOD airstone) and works really well.

Livestock
Black & White Ocellaris Clownfish - Captive Bred
BLUE DAMSEL
Blue and Yellow Damsel
Three Stripe Damsel (2)
Red Fire Blenny
Royal Urchin
Hermit Crabs and Snails.
Toadstools, Zoas, Mushrooms, Xenia, etc.

Maintenance
NO water changes
NO water testing
Only top up for evaporation.
NO additives - only Seachem Prime for tap water.
floss filter made with synthetic pillow stuffing and a dollar store basket. Throw out media when dirty.

Been running for 7 months now. Nothing has died. Only issue was major algae flare up which I killed off by turning off the lights and covering tank with a blanket for 3 days. It all went away. Clean out skimmer when it fills up.

That's it.

Here it is. Find this and others on Amazon. Search Protien Skimmer - prices low to high.
You may need 3 or 4 depending on the your total gallonage. This would shoot the price to well over $40. Or get a $799 Toonzie

Let’s see some pics
