Wrapping up the design and layout of my 625xxl. I am adding a Pentair Aquatics 40W UV light to the sump. I have two trains of thought, that I need help with.

1. Attach UV to its own Pump in the sump and then have it return to the display tank.
Can I connect the UV return line to my main tank return line with a T joint or do I need to have it on its own line running directly to the display tank
2. Attach the UV to the main return line via T joint and gate valve.
This way I can reroute the return water through the UV at night which is when I want to run the UV,

I also would like to automate this process, so scenario 1 with a smart plug makes more sense. That way I can set the plug to turn on once the tank goes dark for the night.

Appreciate any advice on best practice on UV configuration.

Put it in return line with a tee and back into the the return line above it with another tee. Put a gate valve on the input side of it and out out side for ease of removal along with unions. and set whatever flow you want through your uv then use a controller or smart plug to turn the UV on and off as you want. Really the easiest best way. And simple for cleaning and changing bulbs.

I run mine with an auxiliary dc pump from the second chamber back to the first chamber of the sump. Yes this will reprocess some water; this is not an issues with long term use. Plumbing it into your return on a separate circuit will only cause you problems balancing your return. If you want it on your return then plumb it inline with your main return pump and don't plan on adjusting it.

^^^ Almost exactly what I did with the Pentair 40 on my 90g. I also put a union near the UV return flow valve so I can break it open to measure flow into a bucket and then just reconnect it.

Anyway you can post with a picture of this UV set up. I think this is the best bet for what I need.

thank you

I’m doing almost the same thing.
I supply water to the UV from the main return pump.
I have ball valves (supply and return) for the UV that are tee’ed below the main check valve so I can always isolate the UV.
You can plug your UV into the control plug for on/off control. I would always run water through the UV so you know the system is working properly.

I’m in a similar situation where I have a dc pump in the second chamber pumping into the return section but it’s causing issues with the ATO.
I think I may switch to this method and pump it back into the first chamber of the sump. Or just back into the second chamber (skimmer area).

My sump goes drain/fuge to skimmer to return. Running it from my second chamber to the first chamber maintains the return chamber level. No ato issues.
