Pros and Cons to crushed coral substrate

My wrasses has no problem burying themselves in my crushed corals substrate.

I think in time the granules erode and are not so abrasive. I started with Puka shells
and in almost 3 years I now have 80% coarse sand and 10% broken shells
edit: in the 80's thats all we had in my lfs and agian in 98 thats what I used, primarialy for buffering as you mentioned. BTW
