Pros vs Cons: Dremel vs Band Saw

Is it a wet saw?

The Inland saws mentioned here are not only wet saws, but are also designed to be used with saltwater. I wouldn't recommend cutting frags with just any bandsaw. You're asking for it to fail.

Not a wet saw, but I know several guys who use a regular band saw. I shouldn't have a problem as long as I clean it after using it each time.

Gotcha.

This may sound dumb, since I have only used a Dremel with the diamond wheel. Wouldn't using a wet saw with saltwater shorten it's life significantly, unless it is cleaned each time it is used?

Yes.

I have gotten to be quite the pro with the dremmel.... You can cut smaller areas with more accuracy.... As far as the heat goes, it cuts pretty fast because it is much higher RPM... Never had a problem with heat

I had bought a dremel for fragging with diamond disk. I wish I would have put the money toward a bandsaw. If your fragging acans or favia a band saw is a must. Trying to frag a acan or favia with a dremel sucks.

Cons on dremel
Depth
heat
Not as accurate on some corals

Pros on dremel
Portable
cheap

Bandsaw Pros
Accurate
Less heat
Faster

bandsaw cons
Not cheap

+1 I cut all my chalices with a dremmel and diamond cutting wheel. Super fast, little tissue loss and almost no tissue recession after the cut. I also use it to cut Z/Ps as well and like it. Gonna try my hand at Acans next. might not work as well due to cutting wheel depth limitation, but we'll see.

The great thing with a dremmel is that you can cut the back side of chalices and use a scalpel to cut the flesh.... Always worked for me... Never cut the flesh with a dremmel

I use a gryphon with tank water when fragging at a coral shop, wash out after every days use. I have cut over 8k frags on the gryphon, I would never go back to dremel or bone snips

going to watch a few youtube videos then give it a go with the dremel.

I've used the dremel with diamond wheel to frag chalices and z/p's.

I have some small Acan colonies on frag discs that I'm going to attempt today. I think it should go fairly well...and quick...since there is no rock to cut through (just the frag disc).

Used the dremel and was successful with the acans. Yay!!

Fragged 3 pieces into 8 frags (all in front on fresh white tiles).
