By studying the density of microbes in different samples, Whitman
et al. (1998) estimated the total number of bacterial and archaeal cells in the marine environment (including the top 10 cm of sediment) to be somewhere in the range 10^28–10^29. The number of viruses in the oceans is estimated at about 10^30 (Suttle, 2005). This is an unimaginably huge number—it is instructive to write it in the form 1 million, million, million, million, million. If we include the subsurface sediments, this gure would be about 10 times higher. If all the marine virus particles were placed end to end, they would span about 10 million light years (100 times the distance across our own galaxy).

Hmm........(This may not be new info, but I thought at least the links would be intersting or useful. I cross posted this to a user-question thread in the regular fish forum earlier.)
Would too many people explode if I said that your fish can gain immunity to pathogens by being infected with non-related non-pathogenic organisms?

And how many non-pathogenic microbes are in seawater? Apparently just the right amount!

That's a lot of microbes and a lot of pathogens.....and the fish apparently need them!
Repeat after me: Immunity. Immunity. Immunity. Immunity.
Contrarian Sidenote: One of my more interesting customers at the LFS where I used to work, when he would buy a fish or coral, would ask for an extra large bag with lots of extra water from our system just so he could seed his tank more. Back then, even I looked at him funny and questioned him every time he did it....makes a lot more sense now!!
Seawater System
Two 1,200-gpm and one 850-gpm pumps supply fresh seawater to a gravity flume system that runs the length of the pier. Fresh and filtered seawater is available at various locations along the length of the pier. Raw seawater is available sporadically directly from the seawater flume. No instrumentation or sampling protocol shall impact performance of the seawater system.
