Protein Skimmer Bubbles

I had a 36 bow front with a 20 gallon sump. When I moved I sold off the tank and now I am converting my 56 gallon tank with no sump into a reef tank. Since my first tank had a sump I could dampen the bubble coming out of the protein skimmer with a course filter pad. What can I do to get rid of the bubbles from my protein skimmer?
 
A filter sock or foam block near the output of the skimmer is the only way to reduce the microbubbles if you're using a HOB skimmer. You can also try adding a PVC "T" to the output so that one end of the top of the "T" is above the water level and the other part is below, causing bubbles to rise into that top part. Here's a poorly drawn diagram to assist you in visualizing what I am trying to talk about:
