I have a Reef Octopus skimmer.. there's a plug under the collection cup, with an optional drain line.

I am not sure if I should keep it plugged? what's the drain line for?

Please educate me, I am new to skimmers!

They are the best to avoid skimmer overflows if a big enough container is used.

You simply run tubing to a skimmate container. I DIY'd my skimmate container HERE....and note that the site tube is not needed. I also show you how to DIY a float switch for that skimmate container HERE.

Your other option is to purchase a commercial skimmate container for $150-$200.

Interesting build, what would you say the max distance from the skimmer could this be? I would like to make one but put it under my sump bench, would be a few feet or travel but would be down hill for the most part.
