So the next problem there would be how far down the hob skimmer needs to reach because its a long was from the top of the tank to where the water level can be.I think you will be limited to a HOB skimmer. I am not aware of ANY skimmer that would fit in that space (at least none that will do any good for that tank).
150 gallonsLooks like the Icecap K50 MIGHT fit. It would be tight, but may be your best option. What size tank do you have?
What are the dimensions of the skimmer?I have the IceCap K50 to meet this very need and it operates just like a full time skimmer. One you'd be happy with

Thanks for the input but there really isn’t any wiggle room 3.5” is being generous and my budget isn’t quite that high. That IceCap would be like a toy in a 150 gallon tank!
Is there any wiggle room in that 3.5” dimension? The Deltec MC500 is tantalizingly close at 8,25”x3.55”x20.9”

For an HOB option, I believe an HOB version of the 24” Lifereef, the HVS2-24 would work with your only real pump option being the manufacturer recommended Danner Mag 9.5 at 5.0”x3.0”x5.5”, unless you could find another capable pump that would measure under 3.5” wide. You‘d have to give Jeff of Lifereef a call as he’d have to get creative with the gate valve outlet plumbing... nothing that a 90 degree elbow couldn’t fix though.
