Protein skimmer in new aquarium

Hello all,

I am currently cycling a new reef aquarium. I have an Aquaone G216 protein skimmer in-tank that has been running for 4 days. The water outputting from the skimmer is quite white. I put some in a small pot, let it settle and the sediment in the pot was salt. The specific gravity of the tank is fine but I'm just wondering if this is normal for a new protein skimmer in a cycling tank and if so how long it might last?

Skimmers generally have a break in period where they go nuts and function abnormally. That and being in a new tank there aren't really any organics for it to skim out. Give it time and it'll calm down

Many people do not deploy a skimmer during cycling. A skimmer removes macromolecules. The source in mainly wastes from the clean up crew and fish. During cycling you don’t have that.

But skimmers can take a few weeks to break in. So by running it, you get a head start on it.

You can always dump whatever is in the collection cup right back into your sump while you are cycling. Another option is to run the skimmer with the lid off so it overflows back into the sump during the break-in period.
