Protein skimmer on a timer?

So my skimmer cup fills very little in a week, is it ok to put on a schedule app timer to like maybe run day time only or maybe 3 days a week? it’s a nyos 120 I do get a dark skim and I’ve played with water height and adjustments but still same. I have a 75g, abt 7 month old tank -6 fish, feed 2-3 times a day running a cheato fuge, and double filter padding. My another question is will it cut the life span on the skimmer motor

I would just leave it on 24/7. Skimmers also aerate your water. Is the neck clean? I need to clean mine twice a week to keep producing skimmate in the cup. When my neck is covered in debris, it doesn't collect much anymore
