Hi guys.. I’m in the process of upgrading my 26 gallon to a 50 gallon and we moved over our Aquamaxx protein skimmer and it is overflowing like crazy…. we can’t walk away for longer than 15 minutes without having to dump it.
Any advice on why this is happening? Is the new tank too new to run it… I didn’t have this issue when I put it on the 26 new.
Should I try cleaning it?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!

You need to adjust the water level via the air intake. More air = lower water level.

Push the skimmer collection cup all the way up, if there’s a manual valve turn that all the way down, and/or you can drop the water level in the tank so it doesn’t get as much water in. It’s typically from a new skimmer, if there’s something in the water causing it to overreact, or too high of a water level/too strong of a pump/intake.

Do you typically have to adjust them when moving to a larger tank? I’m just wondering why it didn’t require adjustment in the 26.
Thank you for the response!

It could be because the chemistry of every tank is different. And that could be a factor more water is flowing through it.

I have one of these skimmers, mine was going crazy and overflowing the first couple days. I set the cup up the highest i could get it. To deal with water, i just put a towel under it. Then it settles in, and stops. I don't have any good advice other than time.

Reasons this happen:
Water level too high
Need to turn air valve down
Addition of chemicals sending it bonkers
Restriction in air line

Thank you! I don’t think it could be the water level. We just did a huge change with the upgrade so it could def we something throwing it off. We are going to drain it into a bucket and see if it settles overnight before we mess with the air valve since it was working fine as is in the other tank.
