Hi, I was wondering if there is a preferable position for the protein skimmer in the sump tank? ie positioned next to the inlet or next to the return pump. Does it make a difference?

It definitely does make a difference. I would think you want skimmer as far away from the return pump as possible, with the skimmer return pointing towards the opposite end of the sump. What you are trying to do is give the micro bubbles from the skimmer as much time as possible to dissipate before they reach the return pump.

What Martyd said. Also, you want to make sure that the way it's configured in your sump prevents the skimmer inlet from drawing too much of the skimmer outlet water. If it does this, than it will try and clean the same water over and over.

Also they have a recommended depth of your pump to preform at there best

It can be in any chamber other than the return, since the water level will fluctuate in that chamber. As long as you have baffles between the skimmer and the return chamber, you shouldn't have any problems with micro bubbles.
