A nice YouTube video a few years ago floated around of a drunk kid being bet $50 to take a sip out of the skimmer cup. He got the $, but lost all the beer in his belly! If you don't gag a little cleaning the cup, you're skimming pretty wet.

How often do you empty the collection cup? It might just be a case of skimmate is too dry and allowed to ferment too long.

I would clean mine twice a week (half full of wet skim) because it smelled wretched, not because it was full. I’m inclined to think my tank is nastier than most, or that it’s just a normal smell given we are specifically removing dissolved organics from the water column.
