Hey everyone, Mike and I found a Reef Octopus Classic HOB 1000. We got it for 50.00! So anyway, we have it setup however its really loud. It looks like the noise is coming from the air line tube.

We found its missing the silencer piece which we ordered, it will be here next week. Does anyone have this unit? And will the silencer make the unit less noisy? Because our tank is in the master bedroom.

Also is this a good unit? I am debating on keeping it or not

Thanks

Reef octopus makes decent items but I don't have any experience with that model skimmer. I did have different brands of hang on backs that seemed to be more prone to overflowing than in sump so just keep an eye out. I'm sure the silencer will help. I'm sure someone that has that skimmer will chime in. Congrats on the purchase!

I have had this model for a few month. The skimmer is pretty loud compare to in sump ones. The pump is out side touching the tank so it is not to be silent.

Can you post a pic of your unit?

You should be able to go to the coralvue web site and buy one from them. They have all kinds parts for their skimmers.

That unit might be "fairly noisy" relative to some other units just because the pump is hanging out in the air of the room, vs submerged under water. But the air-sucking sound should be almost entirely eliminated by the little silencer. :)

It will quiet down after a while. Look at the pump and make sure it's the correct one. I belive they switched to the cobalt mj1200. It's a better pump and has fewer problems with the back pressure that makes it so noisy.

I bought mine used as well, and after about 6mo I had the same issues.
